Maria Mikedaki is a graduate of the Faculty of History and Archaeology of the University of Athens. She holds both a master’s degree and a PhD in Classical Archaeology from the University of Vienna, Austria. Her research interests focus on ancient theatre (architecture, theatrical space, scenography, masks and costumes), ancient Greek clothing, coroplastic (terracotta figurines) and ancient Greek topography (Attica, Boeotia, Aegean islands).
As an archaeologist, she participated in various excavations in Greece and Cyprus and worked at the Hellenic Ministry of Culture (Directorate of Byzantine and Postbyzantine Monuments, Epigraphical Museum). She also participated in research programs, supervised by the Academy of Athens, the Archaeological Society at Athens, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the University of the Peloponnese.
Her academic career began at the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of Patras, where she worked as a Contract Lecturer appointed according to Presidential Decree (P.D. 407/80) (winter semester 2005-2006). In 2009 she became a Lecturer in Ancient Greek Theatre at the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of the Peloponnese; in 2016 she became Assistant Professor at the same Department, and was tenured in 2020.
She teaches at the Postgraduate Program of the Department of Mediterranean Studies of the University of the Aegean, at the Postgraduate Programs of the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of the Peloponnese, and she has also taught at the Epidaurus Lyceum.
She has written three books and a series of articles published in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings and collective volumes. Finally, she has participated in conferences and has given many lectures as a guest speaker.
She is a member of the Archaeological Society at Athens.
