MA in
Creative Writing, Theatre and Culture Industries:
Artistic, Research and Pedagogical Applications

 

A new Master's Degree in Creative Writing, Theatre and Culture Industries was founded at the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of Peloponnese.
The Programme:

• has 2 specializations, is completed in 3 semesters, requires the completion of 8 courses in total in the 1st and 2nd semesters; and either a dissertation or an internship according to the specialization field in the 3d semester
• provides theoretical courses as well as practical workshops
• aims at training and the production of creative work in the field of playwriting, adaptation, dramaturgy, translation, book editing, digital storytelling, social and pedagogical applications of creative writing in educational and cultural institutions
• is taught by academics and professionals in the field of writing, with an emphasis on playwriting and its applications in culture industries
• is addressed to graduates and alumni of all faculties who wish to follow a career in playwriting, dramaturgy, adaptation, translation, cultural journalism, critique of dramatic texts and their stage representation

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completing their program, students:
• will have acquired knowledge and skills relevant to creative writing, particularly related to theatre and will be able to produce creative texts for different purposes and of different genres
• will have acquired knowledge of the methods and procedures of editing/publishing
• will be able to do academic research in literature, the theatre as well as the fields of arts and culture, leading to the advancement of research and possible doctoral studies
• will have acquired the skills to design cultural policies; curate cultural products; support and manage artistic institutions in Greece and abroad, such as research, scientific and social centers, as well as cultural institutions, the Ministry of Culture, theatre companies, cultural festivals and events, regional institutions, municipal authorities of culture, educational organizations of all levels, communication offices and NGOs
• will have been trained in applying creative writing for artistic, pedagogical and social purposes, with a view to cooperation, the advancement of humanistic and democratic ideals and the removal of social exclusions.
The courses cover main areas of creative writing in relation to the theatre and pertinent culture industries, such as the writing and study of modern and ancient literature, myth and drama; contemporary playwriting and adaptation; creative and critical genres (e.g., the essay and life writing); editing and publishing practices; theatre translation; cultural policy; curating practices in cultural organizations (theatre, festivals, museums etc), pedagogical and social applications of creative writing (schools, social care institutions) and new media applications of creative writing to arts and culture industries ( e.g. digital storytelling).

Focuses on:
• The study of the creative process
• The familiarization with the genres and theory of creative writing
• The production of original creative writing, especially plays.
• Translation, adaptation and performance practices
• Dramaturgical interventions

B. Applications of Creative Writing and Culture Industries
Focuses on:
• Creative writing, its pedagogical and social uses, and the processes of production in cultural industries, such as cultural management and design, cultural policy, and curating practices for performance.
• The theoretical knowledge and practical applications of storytelling, editing, and production in publishing and communication industries.
• The use of creative writing, especially playwriting, as a pedagogical tool in all levels of education and other social care institutions and services.
